Alcatel-Lucent says it will cut jobs in Belgium

BRUSSELS – A spokesman said the group was making the cuts — 1,853 people work for the firm in Belgium at two sites, in Antwerp and Namur — to "re-establish the company’s profitability."

The breakdown of the job cuts still has to be negotiated.

Alcatel-Lucent announced last week that it would cut an extra 850 jobs in France as part of restructuring there, and union sources said another 150 jobs would be transferred away from the company.

The group has been through a long period of cuts and boardroom upheavals since France’s Alcatel and US group Lucent merged.
