Albert and Paola visit Ground Zero

BRUSSELS – King Albert and Queen Paola visited Ground Zero in New York on Sunday afternoon.

The king and queen were accompanied by Foreign Minister Karel De Gucht. The royal couple is visiting New York because Belgium is a member of the UN Security Council this year and next.

They were received at Ground Zero by the authorities of the city of New York. Construction is underway on a large new office complex.

The king and queen were received at ‘7 World Trade Center’, the first World Trade Center address to be rebuilt, by developer Larry Silverstein. He has been commissioned to build the Freedom Towers on the site where the Twin Towers once stood.

Albert and Paola will visit the headquarters of the United Nations today where they will meet with Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.
