95 prisoners escaped in 2006

18 April 2007

BRUSSELS – The spectacular prison break by helicopter on Sunday may have given a different impression but a relatively small number of inmates actually escape each year in Belgium.

Just 95 prisoners escaped from Belgian prisons in 2006. That is 0.99 percent of the 9,578 inmates in prison in Belgium on any given day in 2006.

This emerged from figures from Justice Minister Laurette Onkelinx (Socialist PS). She was questioned on Tuesday by the standing parliamentary committee on justice about the escape by Eric Ferdinant on Sunday.
