BRUSSELS – 50,000 people have signed a petition opposing plans to give limited voting rights to non-European nationals living in Belgium.
The committee against foreigners’ voting rights — which includes members of the Flemish far right Vlaams Blok party – says its militants have already gathered 50,000 ‘physical’ signatures for their petition against the plans.
The organisation adds that it has received a further 8,000 SMS messages of support from mobile phone users and that another 10,000 people have signed its online petition.
The committee opposes a planned new law that would give non-European Union nationals living in Belgium the right to vote in local elections.
