11 Belgians rescued in the Alps

5 May 2008

BELGIUM – In the French Alps, 11 Belgian tourists were rescued after spending a night in a crevice.

The group was on an organised trek in the mountains.

One of the participants injured an ankle and the group proceeded slower than expected.

The participants, all of them experienced trekkers, decided to spend the night in a dry place, in a small crevice, before descending the mountain.

"They made a wise decision," said one of the rescue workers.

The group had already completed four fifths of their trip. One person in the group, a man who had done the trek before, went ahead to alert the emergency services. They rescued the Belgians with a helicopter in the morning.

The injured trekker was taken to a hospital in the nearby town of Nice.
