16 January 2008

AMSTERDAM – A 21-year old woman was killed in a fire in a hotel in Amsterdam on Tuesday evening. A 25-year-old man is seriously injured.

A police spokesperson says that both were tourists, but he could not say from which country.

Three hotel workers were admitted to hospital as well for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is still not known, according to the fire brigade.

The fire started at about 6.15 pm in a room on the third floor of the Swissôtel on the Damrak in the centre of the city. The hotel was evacuated.

The flames did not spread beyond a single room. The fire brigade had the fire under control by 7 pm. Hotel guests were allowed to return to their rooms after that.

Police are investigating the fire. The spokesperson says this is customary when there are fatalities.
