AMSTERDAM — Major trade union Abvakabo FNV said on Tuesday that the legal minimum wage can be detrimental for young people.
Union chairperson Edith Snoey said the minimum wage regulation leads to young people being made redundant when they get older in favour of their young peers who can be paid less.
The minimum wage system has a sliding scale for employees aged 15 to 22. It was introduced to get more young people into the labour market but Snoey said that wages should relate to the work done and not the age of the employer.
Employers organisation VNO-NCW and MKB-Nederland support the union’s call to scrap the minimum wage for young people.
