THE HAGUE – Projects such as special rush-hour lanes may proceed as long as actions are taken to ensure they do not increase air pollution.
Environmental Secretary Van Geel intends such compensatory measures to prevent strict EU air-quality norms from bringing traffic in the Netherlands to a standstill.
A lower speed limit is one possible solution that could allow broadening of roads.
Such a measure could prevent extra traffic from worsening air quality ‘or even possibly on balance [lead to] improvement,’ the politician said on Wednesday in a letter to the Lower House.
Van Geel wants to test the plan with several pilot projects in cities including Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht.
