Municipality puts brake on Schiphol expansion

27 February 2008

AMSTERDAM – The municipality of Harlemmermeer says Schiphol may not build any new take-off or landing runways until 2020.

The municipal executive says that the construction of another runway will lead to unacceptable noise and environmental pollution.

The municipality stipulated earlier that a new runway may only be added if an older one were dismantled. The municipality has now said however that the new runway may not be built at all, even if one of the other runways is dismantled.

A spokesperson for Schiphol said on Wednesday that the airport was aware of the municipality’s standpoint. The spokesperson denied however that there were concrete plans for a new runway, and added that it is the national government which will have the final word on whether a new runway is built.
