THE NETHERLANDS – Statistics Netherlands says immigration to The Netherlands has increased in the first quarter of 2008. Approximately 32,000 people moved to the country, nearly 6,000 more than in the same period in 2007.
Most of the increase was due to immigrants from Eastern Europe, especially from Poland. More than 3,500 Poles settled in The Netherlands in the first quarter, bringing the total number to 45,000.
The number of Poles has doubled since Poland joined the European Union in 2004. Most of the Polish migrants live in the province of Brabant and the market-gardening centres in the west of the country.
