6 June 2005

BARCELONA — A Dutchman allegedly confessed he killed his girlfriend while on holiday in Spain after she refused to marry him.

The man, named only as Miguel Angel W., was arrested late on Sunday night in the centre of Barcelona.

The 59-year-old had gone to a police station in the Ciutat Vella area to give himself up.

He took police to the hostel where the couple had been staying on La Rambla, Barcelona’s main thoroughfare.

Police found the woman’s body. It appeared she had been strangled.

The woman has been identified only as a 44-year-old Ecuadorian with the initials N.S.M.V.

The accused had arrived in Spain the same day as the murder.
