Continued disruption at Amsterdam CS

16 August 2005

AMSTERDAM — Train services to and from Central Station in Amsterdam remain disrupted following the derailment of an Intercity on Monday.

There will be no trains between Central Station and Schiphol Airport, or between Central Station and Sloterdijk Station on Tuesday, track manager ProRail said in the morning.

ProRail said work is continuing to repair the damaged caused by in Monday’s accident but a spokesperson said it was not possible to say when trains travel could resume using the tracks.

The Maastricht-Haarlem Intercity train derailed on the west side of the station at 9.10am and pulled down the overhead line above the track. There were no injuries.

The passenger carries were removed from the scene on Monday and the engine was taken away on Tuesday morning. Pillions are being erected to re-hang the overhead wires. Limited train services will resume on the tracks once that work is completed.

“We want to get trains back running as soon as possible, particularly with an eye to SAIL 2005,” ProRail said.

The Tall Ships and nautical event starts on Wednesday and is expected to attract up to 2.5 million people to Amsterdam over six days. Many of these visitors coming from outside the city plan to travel to Amsterdam Central Station as SAIL is centred on the IJ right behind the station.
