The best apple pie in town

AMSTERDAM — The most delicious apple pies found in the Netherlands are served in the southern city of Eindhoven, a national taste test has proven.

The pies are served by the Brasserie Bruegel in the Dorint Sofitel Cocagne Hotel, newspaper Algemeen Dagblad (AD) reported on Wednesday.

The Centre for Taste Research (CSO) gave the Eindhoven apple pie the only 10 out of 10. Placed second and third respectively are the Dudok in Rotterdam and Paagman in The Hague. They scored 9.5 out of 10.

The first AD National Apple Pie Test involved examining 60 businesses across the country. It found that 20 percent of those tested served pies with bacteria-filled cream and half of the businesses scored less than 5.5.

This was despite the fact that the pies cost on average EUR 2.27.

“Delicious apple pie is fresh, has a crunchy crust and a fresh filling with clear, recognisable pieces of fruit,” CSO director Bob Cramwinckel said.

He added that unfortunately, many businesses serve apple pies that do not meet quality standards.

For the record: the worst apple pie is found at the Theetuin in Ridderkerk. The cream was not good and the cake was stale and old. In a reaction, the café said it had temporarily suspended serving apple pie to customers.
