30 March 2004

AMSTERDAM — A 17-year-old student was stabbed and seriously injured in a school in Friesland on Tuesday. Local police say another student, aged 14, has been arrested.

The victim, of Joure, was attacked in the schoolyard of De Campagnie vocational school in Heerenveen during a break at about 10.10am.

He was rushed to local hospital De Tjongerschans in a serious condition and was later transferred to a hospital in Zwolle. He was stabbed once, but the injury was not considered life threatening.

There is no information on the motive for the stabbing, but a 14-year-old suspect, of Heerenveen, has been arrested.

“We are still standing here in the middle of the spatters of blood,” the director of the school, P. de Jong, told news agency ANP.

“Many students witnessed the incident. Victims’ support, slachtofferhulp, will soon come to the school and we will see who needs help. We are all shocked. We have never experienced anything like this before,” De Jong said.

Lessons have been suspended and the police have sealed off the school, which has 150 students aged 12 to 18.
