Search for Iraqi woman called out

30 August 2005

AMSTERDAM — Dutch police have contacted the Iraqi woman who went missing after going public about domestic violence.

The 43-year-old woman and her 4-year-old daughter were reported as missing from a women’s refugee in the Dutch city of Venlo on 10 March.

She moved into the refugee after divorcing her husband in Velsen. On 10 February the woman and her daughter appeared on current affairs programme NOVA as part of report about honour crimes within Muslim communities.

The police launched an investigation when she disappeared amid fears she had been harmed or kidnapped.

But the public prosecutor’s office in Roermond has confirmed that the woman has been traced to her family in Iraq. She moved back to Iraq around the time of the broadcast and has told Dutch justice officials that she and her child are in good health.

The Missing persons investigation has now been terminated.
