Rotterdam – The new metro station at Rotterdam Central Station opens Monday after work began three years ago.
The new metro station, which cost EUR 146 million, has wide platforms, high ceilings and a great deal of light unlike the old metro station.
“It is a station with international allure where the focus is on social safety,” said director of the Rotterdam public transport company RET, Pedro Peters.
The metro station is not the only building in the area getting a facelift. The entire central station area of Rotterdam has been one big construction site since 2006 so it can handle 330,000 daily train, tram, bus and metro passengers by 2025 – three times as many as at present.
In July 2010, works on a new 2.5 kilometre-long underground tunnel will connect Rotterdam to The Hague.
