Police ‘know’ who killed lawyer

4 June 2004

AMSTERDAM — Dutch police say they know the identity of the man suspected of stabbing a lawyer to death in Doetinchem on Thursday. Officers have expressed the hope the suspect will turn himself in sometime on Friday.

Dutch lawyers association De Nederlandse Orde van Advocaten has expressed shock at the killing of the 32-year-old lawyer Machiel Pul, the first Dutch lawyer to be murdered while working.

The victim was stabbed to death in an office of the solicitor’s firm Grootjans at about 4pm on Thursday. The male suspect, believed to be aged 18 to 20, allegedly fled on foot and was later seen at the train station in Doetinchem.

Police say the suspect was not the victim’s client, but had gone to him for a consultation on a legal matter. The motive for the stabbing is unclear.

Victim Support volunteers gave counselling to the firm’s other staff members after the attack.
