One dead, suspect wounded in Heerlen shooting

5 August 2004

AMSTERDAM — Police arrested a wounded man a few hundred metres from a house in which another man was shot dead in the southern Dutch town Heerlen on Thursday morning.

The injured man had been taken to hospital and will be questioned by police once his condition is judged to be stable.

Police spokesman Jack van Kleef refused to comment on the extent of the man’s injuries.

News agency Novum reported that a woman who lived in the house in the Oude Brunsummerweg area of the town was also wounded.

The police, Novum said, had not ruled out that the suspect had attempted to commit suicide.

Van Kleef said officers had not yet established a definite link between the injured woman, the dead man and the suspect, but they did have “suspicions”.

The motives and the circumstances surrounding what occurred at about 5.30am remain unclear.
