Murat D. ‘threatened other staff’

AMSTERDAM — The suspected 17-year-old killer of a school teacher in The Hague, Murat D., had faced suspension from school for threatening other teachers, it was reported on Friday.

The claim was made in a letter written by murder victim Hans van Wieren on 5 January to the suspect’s parents, newspaper Haagse Courant said.

Van Wieren wrote, the paper said, that Murat was not allowed back to school because he had regularly threatened teachers verbally.

He was barred from school to “prevent repetition” of the threats, pending a meeting between the parents and Van Wieren on 7 January. It is not clear if this meeting took place.

Van Wieren was standing in the Terra College canteen on 13 January when Murat walked in, put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger. Media reports say the suspect has said he is extremely sorry for shooting the teacher.

Murat is in custody and had his remand detention extended by an extra 30 days this week.
