Man arrested over boy’s snowball shooting death

14 April 2004

AMSTERDAM — Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting death of 13-year-old Sedar Soares in a Rotterdam car park last year, the public prosecutor (OM) said on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Curacao man has been in detention since 8 April. He was arrested after allegedly smuggling drugs into the Netherlands and is being detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.

Sedar was shot on 1 February 2003 when he was throwing snowballs in the car park at the Slinge metro station in Rotterdam, newspaper De Telegraaf reported. He died in hospital that same weekend.

Witnesses claim that a man stepped out of a car and started shooting at the group. Sedar was the only one shot and the prosecution offered a EUR 30,000 fine for the tip that led to an arrest.

The prosecution said that the man has been under suspicion for some time and that further arrests have not been ruled out. But in the interests of the investigation, the prosecution is refusing to comment any further.
