AMSTERDAM — Police arrested a “confused” man from The Hague on Tuesday morning who threatened to kill Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende.

A police spokesman said on Tuesday night the man was arrested very quickly because he gave so many personal details about himself.

He remains in remand custody and will appear in court on Thursday, newspaper De Telegraaf reported.

The arrest comes after a 33-year-old man appeared in Rotterdam Court also on Tuesday accused of planning to murder or attack the prime minister.

The man was arrested in October 2003 carrying a knife near Balkenende’s house in Capelle aan den IJssel.

He faces two years jail and TBS psychiatric detention and the court will hand down its ruling on 4 May.
