Greenpeace blocks ship delivering paper

15 October 2007

THE HAGUE  – The environmental pressure group Greenpeace on Saturday prevented a Canadian cargo ship from unloading paper for the Dutch press at the southwestern port of Terneuzen, the news agency ANP reported.

Seventeen Greenpeace militants in dinghies prevented the Finnwood from berthing and wrote slogans like “Newspapers without virgin forest” on the ship’s hull.
Security forces were at the scene but had not intervened, ANP said.

The paper was produced by the group Abitibi-Consolidated, which Greenpeace accuses of cutting down vast swathes of Canada’s virgin forest.
Only a tiny fraction of the 26,000 tonnes of newsprint produced annually by Abitibi for the Dutch press is from recycled paper.
