Girl abducted from school, suspects arrested

22 March 2004

AMSTERDAM — An eight-year-old girl was briefly abducted from a primary school in Drachten on Monday, but was later freed unharmed as police arrested two suspects.

Police said the kidnapping occurred at about 10am as a 52-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man of Schonebeek escaped with the girl in a delivery van, news agency ANP reported.

But two suspects were arrested within the hour after the kidnapping as six police cars set out in pursuit of their escape vehicle. Police detained the suspects on the N381 Drachten-Emmen highway near Zweelo.

They were taken to the Emmen police station and will be transferred on Monday to Leeuwarden for questioning. The girl was unharmed.
