‘Foreigners will profit from road pricing’

18 February 2008

AMSTERDAM – If road pricing is introduced, foreigners will be able to use the roads for free while Dutch motorists will have to pay the tax.

The ministry of transport and water management has not yet come up with a way to charge cars with foreign license plates for using the Dutch motorways, Erasmus University professor of fiscal economy Peter Kavelaars told De Pers on Monday.

Kavelaars studied the possible introduction of road pricing at the ministry’s request. Now he is alerting the ministry to this problem, which admits that there is still no solution. "Within the Benelux talks are being held about fitting road pricing in, but no concrete plans have yet resulted," a spokesperson said in the paper.
