ZANDVOORT – The documentary Buddha’s Lost Children will be the Netherlands’ submission to the Academy Awards in the category best documentary. Producer Pim van Collem announced this on Friday. Holland Film, the organisation that promotes Dutch film abroad, supports the submission.
The film shows how monk Khru Bah has made his monastery into a home for orphans and boys from poor mountain families and teaches them to box, meditate and grow, both spiritually and physically.
Buddha’s Lost Children won a number of international prizes and has drawn 40,000 viewers to cinemas in the Netherlands. The film has been playing at a number of cinemas in the US as well since the beginning of the summer.
Holland Film announced two other Dutch submissions to the prestigious Academy Awards on Wednesday as well. Feature-length film Duska from Jos Stelling will be entered in the category best foreign film and Mortel from Remco Polman will be entered in the category best short animation film.
The Oscar nominations will be announced on 22 January 2008. The award ceremony will take place on 24 February next year.
