Mayor calls for paedophile register

Mayor CA Kleijwegt of the small town of Hellovoetsluis has written to Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner to provide all municipalities with lists of paedophiles living in the local area. He made the call to Donner after a man, 49, who used to work on a children’s farm in the town was arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing a local boy.

Consumer group finds fault with search engines

Five of the leading 13 biggest search engines on the internet have failed usability tests carried out by Dutch consumer lobby group Consumentenbond. The group said Excite, Ilse, Ixquick, Lycos and Zoek.nl had returned poor results during the tests.

Prosecution demands 15 years for taxi murder

The Public Prosecutor’s Office (OM) called on a court in Alkmaar to impose a 15-year jail term on a man accused of shooting a taxi driver through the head during a botched robbery. The victim was found dead in his car in October 2002. He had been robbed of his mobile phone, car keys and about EUR 250.

Two hurt in Botlek explosion

Two people were hurt on Tuesday when an explosion occurred in a silo at storage company European Bulk Services (EBS) in the Botlek industrial area in Rotterdam, a spokesperson for the emergency services said.
