Six Dutch swimmers crossing the English Channel in relay have broken the national record.
The team, led by Richard Broer, swam from France to England across the Channel in just under nine hours. The former Dutch record was nine hours and 29 minutes, over a distance of approx. 34 kms.
The relay swimmers’ attempt was helped by a favourable wind. Mr Broer told reporters that the sea water had a temperature of 16.5 degrees Celsius and the sea was moderate, which made it more agreeable in the water than out. One of the off-duty swimmers fell seasick on the supply vessel but felt better when he was back in the water.
Although the Dutch record was broken by the six-man team, the world record still stands. It was established in 1990 by the US national swimming squad, and is at six hours, 52 minutes.
