4 September 2006

AMSTERDAM — A 38-year-old man arrested in The Hague on Friday evening for being drunk and disorderly confessed in the police station to killing his girlfriend in Haarlem.

Officers in The Hague contacted their colleagues in Haarlem and were told detectives there had just launched a major investigation into the death, a spokesperson said.

The 56-year-old woman was found dead in a hotel in the centre of Haarlem on Friday morning. An initial examination suggested she died as a result of violence.

The Kennemerland police department, which covers Haarlem, put a team of 25 officers on the case.

The suspect was re-arrested at the request of the public prosecutor in Haarlem. No information about a possible motive for the killing has been released.
