‘Crocodile’ sparks alarm in Enschede

30 July 2004

AMSTERDAM — An Enschede resident got the shock of her life on Wednesday when she was confronted by a “crocodile” in her backyard.

In panic, the woman, closed her garden gate and rushed her cat and dog inside the house, Dutch public news service NOS reported on Thursday.

The shocked woman rang police, explaining the reptile was at least 1m long and was slithering in a nearby ditch.

When police arrived, they cautiously approached the crocodile from behind. But when they lifted it up by the tail, they were astounded to realise it was made of plastic.

When police had declared the area “safe”, a boy reported that the crocodile was his toy.
