Children shot at on New Year’s Eve

3 January 2008

HEERHUGOWAARD – The injuries sustained by two nine-year-olds in Heerhugowaard on New Year’s Eve were most likely caused by gunshots. The police reported this on the Radio 1 Journaal on Thursday.

A girl was hit in her upper leg and is still in hospital. A boy was grazed on the ankle and was able to be released after treatment in hospital.

The children were watching fireworks with family members when they were hit. At first they thought they’d been hit by a stray firework, later it emerged that they were probably shot.

The police have not found any bullets but believe the children were wounded by “a projectile from a firearm.”
