AMSTERDAM — Cancer was the number one killer of Dutch men last year. It is expected to be the same for women by about 2010, a report by Statistics Netherlands said on Monday.
The agency – best known by its Dutch initials CBS – said 21,100 men in the Netherlands died as a result of cancer in 2005. This was the most important cause of death among men last year.
Heart and vascular disease were the main cause of death among Dutch women last year. At least 22,600 women died of this condition, while 18,100 died as a result of cancer.
The risk of dying for heart and vascular disease had consistently declined in the Netherlands over the last decade. The sharpest drop has been among men aged 30 to 60.
The CBS said the chances of dying of heart complaints has almost halved since 1970 because fewer smoke, people eat more healthily and great progress has been made in terms of prevention and healthcare.
