AMSTERDAM — Sanitation workers in Amsterdam returned to work on Monday after a week-long strike designed to win concessions in the ongoing negotiations over the pay and conditions agreement (CAO) for local authority workers.
They have their work cut out for them as mounds of garbage have built up around the city during the strike which was called to coincide with the major maritime festival SAIL 2005.
The city’s sanitation department estimates it will take at least a week with additional garbage vehicles to clean up the household trash and litter on the streets. Extra cleansing liquids are being used to mask the stench of rotting garbage.
The strikers had hoped the industrial action would put pressure on the city to bow to their demands in the CAO talks, but there has been no break through in the talks to date.
