Another morning of delays and tailbacks

7 December 2005

AMSTERDAM — Accidents and roadworks caused long delays on motorways around the Netherlands on Wednesday morning.

The A29 near Heinenoord to Bergen op Zoom was closed after three lorries collided with each other.

Traffic was slowed to a crawl in the Velser Tunnel between Beverwijk and Velsen due to a go-slow Fire Brigade vehicles to protest against some aspects of the new CAO wage and work conditions agreement for their sector.

Asphalt-laying work caused a 21-kilometre tailback on the A1 from Beekbergen in the direction of Amsterdam, resulting in an enforced delay of up to 2 hours for motorists. The road was cleared by 10am but the traffic jam persisted for some time after that.

Automobile association ANWB said that the delays caused by the temporary closure on Wednesday morning of three Amsterdam lanes of the A4 near Hoofddorp would take some time to clear up.

Roadworks also restricted traffic travelling to Rotterdam on the A16 (Antwerp to Rotterdam) to one lane at Galder en Zonzeel.
