Ajax win Dutch Premier League

Ajax Amsterdam beat VVV-Venlo by 2 -0 to win the Dutch Premier League; it is the Amsterdam team’s 31st national title.

The victory was all the sweeter for being played in Amsterdam’s home stadium. Frank de Boer’s team was just too strong for the visitors from Limburg and Siem de Jong scored the first goal in the eighth minute. He scored the second in the 58th minute.

The title was already, in theory at least, in Ajax’s hands as the Amsterdam team had a better goal difference than second placed Feyenoord. Although the Rotterdam team could have theoretically still won the Premier league title, it would have taken to eight -nil victories for Feyenoord to have claimed the title.

Winning the Dutch Perrier league doesn’t only mean a big shiny trophy; it also means Champions League football next season and a place among Europe’s elite.
