AMSTERDAM — Police have arrested 10 people on suspicion of smuggling cocaine from the Antillean island of Curacao to the Netherlands.
The arrests were carried out between February and June, and police accuse six of the suspects of involvement in the transport of 13kg of cocaine last month. And at the start of this year, four transports of 7kg of cocaine were seized.
Nine suspects are still being detained and the main suspect has been described as a 36-year-old Enschede man, Dutch Public news service NOS reported.
The gang is accused of smuggling a large quantity of cocaine for the past three years and police have arrested in total 64 people between now and 2003.
Most of the suspects have been convicted and sentenced to jail terms or community service orders. Justice officials are also moving to requisition the funds earned by the illegal trade. The exact amount of money has not been revealed.
