A man arrested for making a bomb threat at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport is a 40-year-old Russian, a Dutch military police spokesman said Tuesday.
Heavily armed gendarmes Monday nabbed the man after he told passers-by he had a bomb, before locking himself in a restroom above the airport’s busy terminal one and two departure halls, prompting an evacuation of passengers.
“He is a 40-year-old Russian, who does not speak Dutch or English,” military police spokesman Martijn Peelen told AFP.
The man, whose name was not revealed, remained in custody as the police investigation continued, Peelen said.
Flights were delayed at Europe’s fifth-largest airport Monday after the man made the threat at around 11:00 am (1000 GMT).
Police later said the man had no explosives in his possession.
Between 120,000 and 140,000 passengers pass through Schiphol daily.
