The death toll from a suicide bombing last week, the worst militant strike for months in Russia's conflict-torn Caucasus, rose to 18 Thursday as another victim died of her wounds.

"A 44-year-old woman has today died of her wounds in a hospital in Moscow," an official with the representative office of North Ossetia in the city, Irbek Doyev, told AFP.

About 130 people remain in hospital in Moscow and the North Ossetian capital Vladikavkaz where a suicide bomber detonated a car bomb at a busy central market on September 19.

Among the dead was an 18-month-old baby, while nearly 200 were wounded.

Russian authorities are fighting a deadly Islamist insurgency in the North Caucasus.

The blast was the most serious suicide attack since a double bombing carried out by two female suicide bombers on the Moscow metro on March 29 killed 40 and wounded more than 100.
