May 6 is the day when new recruits are sworn in for the Vatican’s elite Swiss Guard. The world’s oldest and smallest regular army formed in 1506, it now consists of 110 guards. All recruits must be Catholics, all must have full secondary education and undergo basic military training in Switzerland’s Armed Forces.
