Two rebels killed in Dagestan: report

Russian special forces killed two suspected rebels during an operation in Dagestan in the troubled Caucasus region, the Interfax news agency reported.

The rebels were suspected of terrorism-related crimes, the news agency said of the operation which took place in the village of Bammatiourt.

Dagestan is part of Russia’s volatile North Caucasus, where authorities are struggling to quash a Muslim insurgency that the Kremlin considers a terrorism threat.

Earlier this month Russian President Dmitry Medvedev sacked the internal affairs minister of Dagestan, as the chief of the volatile republic urged Moscow to step up aid and weaponry to fight the insurgency.
