Polish police on Friday said someone vandalised 60 Soviet military graves at a Red Army cemetery in the eastern village of Milejczyce.
The unknown perpetrators broke off the red stars attached to tombstones and scattered them throughout the cemetery. They also knocked over three entire tombstones, according to the PAP news agency.
The mayor notified police on Wednesday, and they have opened an investigation that could see the perpetrators receive up to five years in jail if caught.
Around 1,600 Red Army soldiers are buried in the cemetery. They died while fighting against Nazi Germany on Polish soil during World War II.
