Russian condemns US envoy attack

Russia on Wednesday condemned the mob attack that killed the US ambassador to Libya and said the incident underlined the need for Moscow and Washington to join their efforts in fighting extremism.

“We stongly condemn this crime, which once again shows the need for joint efforts on the part of our countries, and on the part of the entire international community, in the fight against the evil of terrorism in all its forms,” Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in a message to his US counterpart Hillary Clinton, according to the Interfax news agency.

Lavrov said that he was shaken by the “tragic death” of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three colleagues.

They were killed in an assault late Tuesday on the US consulate in Benghazi by a mob angered by a US-made film deemed offensive to Islam.
