Khodorkovsky deserves ‘real justice’: EU Parliament head

Published on 14/12/2010

European Parliament president Jerzy Buzek, with the mother of Mikhail Khodorkovsky by his side, called Tuesday for "real justice" ahead of a verdict in the second trial of Russia's ex-richest man.

“We hope that tomorrow we will have real justice for Mikhail Khodorkovsky,” Buzek said after meeting Marina Khodorkovskaya at the parliament in the French city of Strasbourg.

“His case became an emblematic symbol of major problems of the rule of law, legal nihilism and human rights in today’s Russia,” said Buzek, a former Polish prime minister.

Buzek said he raised the case of Khodorkovsky as well as the unresolved murders of Russian journalists during a recent meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in Moscow.

“I encouraged the Russian government to undertake a comprehensive reform of the judicial system,” he said.

Khodorkovsky, already serving an eight-year sentence for fraud, is on trial on new charges of money laundering and embezzlement that could see the head of the now defunct Yukos oil giant receive another 14-year jail term.

A Russian court will Wednesday begin announcing the verdict in Khodorkovsky’s second trial, a case watched globally as a critical moment in its post-Soviet history.
