Russia’s flag carrier Aeroflot on Thursday claimed some three million euros ($4.1 million) in damages from a Swiss chemicals company that allegedly failed to supply it with enough de-icing fluid last month.
The disruption caused the airline to cancel hundreds of flights during the busy holiday travel season and resulted in the dismissal of Aeroflot’s deputy CEO Vladimir Smirnov.
Aeroflot said in a statement that it would seek 2.9 million euros in damages from the Swiss firm Clariant for a “failure to deliver de-icing fluid at the end of 2010.”
The Russian airline did not specify when the delivery disruptions occurred or which court would handle the claim.
The Sheremetyevo airport travel disruptions occurred between December 24 and 28.
The Swiss firm notified Aeroflot that it would be interrupting regular shipments on December 30.
Aeroflot’s problems occurred during a broader Russian air travel shutdown that affected both of Moscow’s main international airports following unseasonable winter rain.
