Swiss bakery not allowed to place village name on products

10 April 2008

PARIS – A Paris court has barred a Swiss-based cookie maker from using the term “from Champagne” on its packaging.

The ruling says the advertising by SAS Cornu treads upon the trademark coveted by makers of the sparkling wine in the Champagne region of eastern France.

It also says the company’s Swiss-based web site – www.champagne.ch – illegally co-opts the Champagne name.

The CIVC, a Champagne winegrowers’ committee that brought the case, has hailed Wednesday’s ruling that applies only to France. It says cigarettes, perfume and a bubble-bath product had wrongly tried to use the name in the past.

Under French law, the name can only be used in commercial marketing for the wine.
