Swiss town hall meeting agrees Olympic ski jump

Switzerland’s bid for the 2016 Winter Olympics has been given a public boost ahead of a key public vote on Sunday.

The mountain villageof Kandersteg approved a credit of CHF1.2 million ($1.2 million)to build access roads to an existingski jump shouldthe Sion 2026 Winter Olympics bid succeed.

The local town hall assembly on Friday overwhelmingly approved a proposal after a brief debate, during which both the mayor and most citizens spoke of a chance that must be seized.

Kandersteg is a resort village in the Swiss Alps, about 55km outside the capital, Bern.

The decision comes as canton Valais gears upfor a key June 10 vote on Sion’s 2026 Winter Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is due to choose the host city in September 2019.

Sion faces six other competitors, mainly from Europe.
