Swiss engineering group ABB said on Tuesday it had won a contract worth about $100 million (76 million euros) to upgrade power installations at Rio Tinto iron ore mines in Australia.
Upgrading and installing new infrastructure will increase power supply to support expanded iron ore production at mines in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, ABB said in a statement.
ABB will be responsible for the design, engineering and supply of equipment needed for the upgrade and for the installation of new electrical substation infrastructure.
Upgrades for Rio Tinto, one of the world’s leading mining and energy companies, should be completed by 2013, the Swiss power and technology group said.
