Swiss recall diplomat from Iran

Published on 10/02/2009

BERN - Switzerland's Foreign Ministry says it recalled a Swiss diplomat from Tehran because of an alleged incident with his Iranian girlfriend.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Jean Philippe Jutzi says the diplomat, who led the Swiss Embassy’s section for US interests, left Tehran in January after the "regretful incident".

Jutzi declined to comment Monday on allegations by Iranian media that a sexual relation with the woman led to the temporary arrest of the diplomat.

Daily Jomhuri-e-Eslami reported Saturday the Swiss diplomat was arrested in north Tehran while doing "unlawful acts in a car".

But according to Mehr news agency, Iranian police denied the detention.

Jutzi says the diplomat’s girlfriend left the country. He declined to identify the two.
