Swiss police shoot and kill man after car chase

Swiss police said Thursday they shot and killed a man armed with a shotgun after a high-speed car chase through the usually tranquil lakeside town of Montreux.

The unidentified man, a 45-year-old Swiss citizen, was driving a car with Russian plates and 25,000 Swiss francs ($27,000, 20,800 euros) were found inside the vehicle, police said.

The car was spotted speeding on the motorway around Lake Geneva and failed to stop when police gave chase.

It was finally cornered in downtown Montreux at 3:00 am (0100 GMT).

Police said they opened fire when the man stepped out of the vehicle holding the shotgun and acting in a threatening manner.

One police officer was injured when a colleague’s bullet hit him in the shoulder, but his life was not in danger, police said.
