Over 1,000 Tibetans march in Bern

GENEVA – Over a thousand people on Tuesday demonstrated in the Swiss capital Bern to mark the 50th anniversary of the Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule, Swiss news agency ATS reported.

Around 1,200 protestors marched peacefully to the Chinese embassy where the entrance was fenced up and guarded by police.

On approaching the embassy, demonstrators played the Tibetan anthem and waved its flag.

Monks also chanted prayers while other Tibetan refugees shouted slogans such as "long live Dalai Lama," and "stop the killing in Tibet."

A minute’s silence was also observed.

The protest was due to end in front of Switzerland’s federal parliament house, with Swiss parliamentarians and a representative of Tibet’s spiritual leader the Dalai Lama delivering speeches.

Meanwhile, some 120 city halls and Swiss official buildings raised the Tibetan flag to mark the occasion, according to the Swiss-Tibetan Friendship Association.
