One seriously injured in Swiss tourist train crash

A tourist train collided with a delivery van in the Swiss Alps on Monday, seriously injuring one person and lightly injuring several more, police told AFP.

“One person has been seriously hurt. The individual has been flown by helicopter to the university hospital in Bern,” the capital, a police spokesman in the mountainous Valais region said.

“Several people have been lightly injured,” he added.

The crash between the van and the tourist train which winds its way through Valais’ snowy mountains occurred in the village of Moerel.

Two carriages derailed as a result.

It was not the first accident involving a tourist train in the region.

In July 2010, a 64-year-old Japanese woman died and dozens were injured in the derailing of Valais’ Glacier Express, which runs between Zermatt and St. Moritz — a few kilometres from the site of Monday’s collision.
